Today we look at the topic of Trunk Guns for Survival/Preparedness purposes, discussing in detail the various considerations for such a firearm as well as some of the better options out there. The focus is on reliable yet inexpensive firearms that can stand up to the wear and tear involved in just riding around in your vehicle waiting for the time they might be needed. Included is information on various military surplus semiautos and bolt actions, major manufacturer hunting guns, and various shot guns that might be suitable. We also touch briefly on some of the legal considerations. For the last segment your host looks at the KelTec PMR-30 and discusses both his own experiences and the “scuttlebutt” on this intriguing design and where it might fit into a survival plan.

Since the first time I read about them in Mel Tappan’s book “Survival Guns” I have been interested in the idea of “chamber inserts” and “sub-caliber devices” for survival purposes. These are cartridge-sized adapters which allow shooters to use other types of ammo (generally pistol rounds of the same bore size or smaller) in their guns safely as long as the bore diameters/pressures, etc. are suitable enough to be tolerated. On this episode we discuss the potential applications for such accessories, look at some of the caliber pairings that seem to work best, and consider other factors to keep in mind. At the end we also do a quick overview of the different classifications of NFA firearms and their potential usefulness in a Preparedness context.

Many might think that old military surplus bolt action rifles have little place in a modern survival armory. They lack the higher capacity of most magazine-fed semi-autos, they are slower to operate and they are typically chambered in “overly-powerful” calibers.

Your humble host begs to differ, however… In many ways a good ex-military turnbolt is a good option for survivalist/prepper types for the following reasons:

1) You can often find them for very little money (at the moment Mosin-Nagants are still selling for under $100 in many places)

2) They are extremely robust and reliable

3) They tend to be quite accurate

4) They generally fire a very powerful cartridge which makes them a good option for hunting medium/large game and for long-range needs

On this episode I talk about a few of the designs available and some of their history, advantages and disadvantages for survival use, and what to look for in a surplus rifle.

It’s easy to focus on various firearms platforms and discuss the survival utility of different designs, and frankly it can be a fun conversation. However, it’s possible to overlook one of the key components of a gun “package” which is the ammunition that makes it useful. While it makes a lot of sense to stock up on as much ammo as you can possibly afford, it also seems like a worthwhile idea to consider what you might have to do if the situation arises down the road where you have expended all of your ammunition supplies and have to come up with creative solutions.

So on this episode of the Survival Gun Show we discus “Armageddon Ammunition”, as Chip likes to call it. That is, three strategies to allow you to reload ammo when traditional methods have failed or run out.

The first idea is using cast bullets, the second is swaging empty .22LR cases to serve as bullet jackets, and the third is adapting matches as gunpowder and priming compound replacements. This is a fairly long episode (just over 42 minutes) as we delve into these various ideas. (NOTE: It probably goes without saying but if you do decide to try any of these methods do so with extreme caution and make certain in advance that they do not violate any local ordinances).

Recently the host of the Survival Gun Show has been asked by listeners to talk about single-shot firearms and their survival usefulness so today’s episode covers that topic, although with a specific focus on “Combo Guns” (which I define by having options which allow you to easily switch out barrels orotherwise guns which come as an over-under with integral rifle and shotgun barrels). In this show I discuss the Handi-Rifle, the Savage 24C, the Springfield Armory M6 and the Rossi Wizard, all flexible guns offering versatility despite their inherent limitations.

I provide an overall description of each model along with the “survival” features I consider useful and occasional aspects that I believe to be limitations. While I may like or dislike a specific firearm I try to leave my own opinion out of the discussion and instead just share information that I hope will allow you to determine if any of these guns might be worthwhile additions to your own survival battery.

If you have ever spent time perusing Survival/Preparedness forums you’ve probably noticed that very often people are quite opinionated about their perspective regarding Survival Guns. Sometimes you go away from reading a thread feeling like if you don’t own a top-of-the-line .308 battle rifle you can’t possibly be ready for the horrors that await us in the coming future.

I happen to disagree with that idea. While I like top-of-the-line .308 battle rifles I don’t think they are the most important facet of preparedness, even when it comes to firearms. What matters is that you have a firearm (or firearms) that will serve your particular needs and that you shoot well with it. On this episode I compare two basic categories of “Survival” rifles:

* Sporting guns (bolt and lever-action hunting rifles, single-shots, etc.)

* Military-pattern magazine-fed semi-auto “Sport Utility” rifles.

While discussing the advantages and weaknesses of each type I try to bring home the point that what really matters is what “you” can do with “your” rifle and that all else is merely academic.

Do you remember “Mad Max”? You know, that old Mel Gibson movie series from back in the early 1980s about a post-apocalyptic world where everything has gone to Hades in a handbasket? Well, despite the fact that your humble host does not foresee that sort of bleak futuristic landscape it does make sense when doing survival planning to at least consider some of the worst possible outcomes and try to prepare for them.

With that in mind today we discuss ammo flexibility for defensive sidearms in general and specifically what I like to call the “Mad Max” pistol. By that I mean a firearm that can handle multiple calibers. In some sense you could consider your average .357 Magnum revolver to be a “Mad Max” handgun as it can use both .38 Special and .357 Magnum, or even a bigger .44 Magnum cannon that will also feed .44 Specials. However, in this specific case I’m discussing the Glock platform with aftermarket barrels which can give you the capability of shooting 9mm, .357 Sig and .40 S&W from the same firearm.

Now that sounds like a good option in a “Mad Max” world, doesn’t it?

The aftermarket barrels I discuss on this episode can be found at Lone Wolf’s web site

For using 9mm in a Glock 22, 23 or 27 you will need to pick up the appropriate magazine(s): http://glockstore.com/index/3_Mags+%26amp%3B+Extensions/

On today’s episode we discuss the SKS carbine, first fielded by the Soviets in 1945 and imported into the US and Canada in large quantities over the past two decades. Chip shares his personal story of buying his first firearm as an 18-year-old in the mid-1990s (a Norinco SKS, naturally) and then talks about the characteristics of the SKS that make it a viable ‘Survival Gun’. In addition, attention is paid to some of the add-ons and accessories available for the SKS, with a focus of keeping it serviceable for survival and preparedness needs.

General information about the SKS can be found here.
