Show originally streamed live The 28th of December, 2011

Post-Christmas cheer abounds as Mark and Doc discuss the Holidays, gunny gifts given and received, and firearm related plans for the New Year. An elf from Northern Alberta relates the joy of finding a custom .243 rifle that Santa legally mailed to his doorstep. This promotes an examination of the widely varying inanities of Canadian and American gun laws. Wheelie love flows as Grant Cunningham’s highly recommended new Book of the Revolver is reviewed. Stockings of GRRN coal are distributed to politicians, agenda-driven bureaucrats, and the goofballs of Sons of Guns. Glasses of Barstool cheer are raised to Kathy Jackson, JP Grips, Midwest Gun Exchange, and the Appleseed Project. And…

Dressed as an elf all snug in her bed,
While visions of bayonetted computers dance in her head;
Gail doesn’t call in.

It’s an excellent Winter’s eve. A Happy New Year to All!

Notes: The Dec 14 ‘11 Barstool was cancelled due to Doc being under the weather and Mark’s family’s loss of a member of the Greatest Generation. Barstool #32 1/2 will not be released in order to encourage live participation in the Barstool Discussions.

<itunes:summary>Show originally streamed live The 28th of December, 2011

And…

Dressed as an elf all snug in her bed,
While visions of bayonetted computers dance in her head;

It’s only the third day of 2012 and we already have a second new podcast joining the Gun Rights Radio Network. Ken Kowalski is hosting & producing The Rimfire Podcast all the way from Afghanistan while he’s serving our country.

Anyone that’s in to shooting has a rimfire firearm if not multiple ones. This is a great podcast for someone new getting into firearms or someone that wants to remember their childhood, starting out with a rimfire. If we’re actually like most of us you probably have a big selection of different rimfires rifles already or at least you should. Rimfires are just plain out fun and inexpensive to shoot.

You can find all of the contact information and subscription links for The Rimfire Podcast the GRRN page.

Also you can communicate with the host and other listeners to this new podcast and all the others at the GRRN discussion forum.

The Sunday after Thanksgiving 2011 Mark Vanderberg did one of the things he really enjoys doing visiting a local gun shop to see what’s new and available. While at Midwest Gun Exchange he had an opportunity to interview General Manager Brad Rupert.

We talked about the items that were going to be hot for this Christmas season and what items are selling best during this hunting season in Indiana. And where will he get a little bit of insight into the retail firearms store.

If you are ever in northern Indiana specially if you’re passing through the toll road that runs east and west through the northern part of the state you may want to plan on taking a small detour at what a large firearms retailer looks like.

Since the first time I read about them in Mel Tappan’s book “Survival Guns” I have been interested in the idea of “chamber inserts” and “sub-caliber devices” for survival purposes. These are cartridge-sized adapters which allow shooters to use other types of ammo (generally pistol rounds of the same bore size or smaller) in their guns safely as long as the bore diameters/pressures, etc. are suitable enough to be tolerated. On this episode we discuss the potential applications for such accessories, look at some of the caliber pairings that seem to work best, and consider other factors to keep in mind. At the end we also do a quick overview of the different classifications of NFA firearms and their potential usefulness in a Preparedness context.

Many might think that old military surplus bolt action rifles have little place in a modern survival armory. They lack the higher capacity of most magazine-fed semi-autos, they are slower to operate and they are typically chambered in “overly-powerful” calibers.

Your humble host begs to differ, however… In many ways a good ex-military turnbolt is a good option for survivalist/prepper types for the following reasons:

1) You can often find them for very little money (at the moment Mosin-Nagants are still selling for under $100 in many places)

2) They are extremely robust and reliable

3) They tend to be quite accurate

4) They generally fire a very powerful cartridge which makes them a good option for hunting medium/large game and for long-range needs

On this episode I talk about a few of the designs available and some of their history, advantages and disadvantages for survival use, and what to look for in a surplus rifle.

The Saiga family of rifles is essentially the modern offspring of the AK-47 in a sporting package and today we discuss their usefulness to Survivalist/Prepper-types. Available in several rifle calibers as well as a few shotgun gauges, Saigas are a relatively low-priced option (at least in most of their configurations) for a combination defensive/hunting tool.

My experience with Saigas is mostly limited to their .223 and .308 versions, but I’ve come to think they are a great option for certain purposes (which I discuss on the program).

The best site around for learning about Saigas is: http://forum.saiga-12.com/

<itunes:summary>The Saiga family of rifles is essentially the modern offspring of the AK-47 in a sporting package and today we discuss their usefulness to Survivalist/Prepper-types. Available in several rifle calibers as well as a few shotgun gauges, Saigas are a relatively low-priced option (at least in most of their configurations) for a combination defensive/hunting tool.

My experience with Saigas is mostly limited to their .223 and .308 versions, but I've come to think they are a great option for certain purposes (which I discuss on the program).

The best site around for learning about Saigas is: http://forum.saiga-12.com/

It’s easy to focus on various firearms platforms and discuss the survival utility of different designs, and frankly it can be a fun conversation. However, it’s possible to overlook one of the key components of a gun “package” which is the ammunition that makes it useful. While it makes a lot of sense to stock up on as much ammo as you can possibly afford, it also seems like a worthwhile idea to consider what you might have to do if the situation arises down the road where you have expended all of your ammunition supplies and have to come up with creative solutions.

So on this episode of the Survival Gun Show we discus “Armageddon Ammunition”, as Chip likes to call it. That is, three strategies to allow you to reload ammo when traditional methods have failed or run out.

The first idea is using cast bullets, the second is swaging empty .22LR cases to serve as bullet jackets, and the third is adapting matches as gunpowder and priming compound replacements. This is a fairly long episode (just over 42 minutes) as we delve into these various ideas. (NOTE: It probably goes without saying but if you do decide to try any of these methods do so with extreme caution and make certain in advance that they do not violate any local ordinances).

The AR-15 Rifle…. You either love it or you hate it, but in Survival/Preparedness circles you are sure to encounter this plastic-and-aluminum firearm marvel. On this episode Chip discusses the good and the bad of the AR platform, some of the reasons why they’ve become so popular, and some aspects of the .223/5.56mm caliber that make it a serviceable choice for a survival firearm. (NOTE: I also respond to some listener emails in the first part of the episode relating to Episode #7 regarding Sporting Rifles vs. Semi-autos).

If you would like more information about these “black rifles” (as they’re sometimes called) the following links might be helpful, but the truth is the internet is chalk-full of information at the AR and the trick is determining the useful material mixed in amongst the occasionally misinformed opinions:

http://www.ar15.com/ (Expect to spend some hours there reading through the forums if you really, REALLY want to know all you can about the AR15).

(A Google search for “AR15″ will generate gazillions of pages on the topic so your info search has only just begun… )

<itunes:summary>The AR-15 Rifle.... You either love it or you hate it, but in Survival/Preparedness circles you are sure to encounter this plastic-and-aluminum firearm marvel. On this episode Chip discusses the good and the bad of the AR platform, some of the reasons why they've become so popular, and some aspects of the .223/5.56mm caliber that make it a serviceable choice for a survival firearm. (NOTE: I also respond to some listener emails in the first part of the episode relating to Episode #7 regarding Sporting Rifles vs. Semi-autos).

If you would like more information about these "black rifles" (as they're sometimes called) the following links might be helpful, but the truth is the internet is chalk-full of information at the AR and the trick is determining the useful material mixed in amongst the occasionally misinformed opinions:

http://www.ar15.com/ (Expect to spend some hours there reading through the forums if you really, REALLY want to know all you can about the AR15).

(A Google search for "AR15" will generate gazillions of pages on the topic so your info search has only just begun... :) )
