I recently signed up for the concealed carry class at my local sheriffs office, and to qualify we need to pass the "US Marshal's Backup Weapon Qualification Course". I've tried looking around online to see just what exactly that entails, but can't come up with much. Thought I'd ask here and see if anybody is familiar with it.

I can tell you that searching Google for the answer mostly finds your threads...  LOL!

Looks like USA carry answered your question.

Eric,
Thanks for posting that link. The COF is interesting. For a trained shooter it's a piece of cake. But, to run that as a requirement to obtain a CCW seems a bit harsh: it does require a level of training that IMHO would equate to a IDPA mid-level Marksman class shooter. I don't want to start anything here, but I think the requirement is a bit stiff in order to exercise your 2nd Ammendment right. Personally, I would like to see all CCW holders possess the skill to pass that, but I'm not certain I would mandate it. I'm curious as to what Sherrifs office is mandating that. I also wonder how many of their Deputies could pass it.

Yeah, I posted the question a few places hoping to find an answer. They got there first. ...I think. lol. I'm just wondering if it's what I'm looking for since that says: US Marshals Service Handgun Qualification Course -- Modified And what I'm looking for is the:US Marshals Service Backup/Secondary Weapon Qualification Course Or does 'Modified' denote that it's for back-up weapons?

Am I the only one who thinks that Iowa needs to realize it's in the middle of nowhere.

Passing through there at the end of this past year, in 90% of the state I could have fired a hipowered rifle into the air at a 45 degree angle and not felt too bad about it.   Corn corn and more corn.

I'd be interested in taking a decent course though...LA's was ridiculous.

Cade, Have you no concern for the safety of the corn? Barbaric.

Good God, Kevin, I nearly fell of the stool at work I just chuckled so bad.

I will say that people in Iowa happen to be the friendliest I've encountered outside of Louisiana and Georgia.

That sounds like a fun course but I agree, that's kind of stiff for a carry permit.  Yikes!  Still sounds fun though.  I'll have to try that sometime.

There might be a lot of corn out here, but there's also plenty of farmhouses and farmers around, more than you'd realize. Joking aside, our population density is just high enough to make firing off into the wild blue with wild abandon a little more of a gamble than I'd like to take  Grin That's a good part of the reason that we're limited to shotguns for our deer seasons.

Yeah, we're pretty obliging here.

Once I take it, or just plain find out what it is, I'll let everybody know... Until then, I'm out practicing with my Sig using a de-commissioned barn door.

Howdy all.  Grin

I realize I will be in the minority here with certain views I hold, but I don't think the USMS BUG course of fire is unrealistic to carry a concealed weapon in public.

Before you carry a gun out in public, amongst people I love and care deeply for I'd like to know that you know when you can shoot, and that you have a pretty good chance at hitting what you're aiming at.

Granted, people do miss. That's why we practice, to minimize the odds of that happening. I have no problem with people keeping a gun in their home for protection, but I do want some assurance that you know what you're doing when you go out in public.

Yes, I qualify every year, as required by my employer. In order to keep my job, I have to. I also have to pass a course of fire out to 25 Yards with weak and stronghand shooting from a barricade. It's not that difficult. You would be amazed at the number of co-workers that have to "re-qualify" each year.

If you set the bar high, but not unrealistic, it makes people practice and focus on the fundamentals. That in my view is a good thing.

The letter said Marshals, the instructor said Marines, whatever it was it consisted of:

3 yards

2 to the head, 3 to the chest
          reload
          5 to the chest

7 yards
2 to the head, 3 to the chest
          reload
          5 to the chest

15 yards
          5 to chest
          reload
          drop to one knee
          5 to chest

To pass you needed to get a minimum of 24 out of 30 inside the silhouette.

Which is why I live in a "shall" issue state and not a "may" issue state. The shooters in Iowa need to push "shall" issue legislation to get rid of this nonsense. It is the equivalent to Southern states forcing some black voters to write out the Constitution from memory for their literacy test prior to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. I say this a native of North Carolina, that was wrong then and the hoops Iowa is forcing you to hop through are wrong now.
