I noted in the news that the surviving Onion Field killer was denied parole this week.  I am betting Mas has studied this incident, but I would throw the question out for anyone.

What was the basis for the seeming hatred and derision for Officer Hettinger?  I am aware of what he did at the time of the shooting (ran for his life) but I get the impression that he is scorned for other reasons.  Apparently there was also an issue about his conduct during the course of the original car stop.  What is it about Hettinger that has subjected (apparently) him to this?

I'd appreciate any information or sources on this subject.

Hi Luggo,
Mas here, guesting on Gail's account.
I never knew Hettinger. Those who did saw a lot of "survivor guilt." The protector who is rendered helpless is profoundly impacted psychologically. Hettinger got a huge amount of criticism from chairborne commandoes who blustered about, "I would have done it THIS way if I had been there." Some said he should have disregarded his partner's safety and opened fire.
Certainly, we learned from this the importance of carrying hideout backup guns. But a lot of the criticism directed against Hettinger was unfounded IMHO, and was predictably psychologically devastating to him.
best,
Mas

Nothing in detail, only parenthetical mention of it as a classic example of why a backup gun is an awfully good idea. Joseph Wambaugh did great research on it, and with his LAPD connections, no one could do it better. Read his book The Onion Field if you haven't already. Most libraries have it, and I suspect it's still in print. If not, there will be tons of used copies in bookstores and on Amazon.
best,
Mas (sneaking in over Gail's shoulder again)
