Great job Pete!!!

I found your gun review from the perspective of a first time gun owner to be very interesting.

Great Review.  I have also recently been going between the Glock 19 and the Glock 17.  I think I have decided to go with the Gen 4 17 as I find the 19 a little small for my hands so I shoot the 17 better.

Pete, I really enjoyed your review and I commend you for taking responsibility for your safety.

However, I have to disagree with your reasons for having a full capacity handgun. I definitely agree that under stress it could be difficult to hit a target. However, the idea that blowing off the the first rounds fired until you can get in control of your emotions is not advisable. Firstly, you might not have a "second chance" after the initial contact. Those first few shots might be all you'll have. Furthermore, you are responsible for every round that leaves the muzzle of your gun. What is that miss on the bad guy becomes an unintentional hit on someone else. I completely agree with your plan to get additional training, that's definitely the way to go. Training as well as competition will help you get used to the high stress encountered in self defense encounters.

Yes, I agree.  I also use semi auto for the house but only for it's high capacity. Unfortunately home invaders often come in packs and seeing as how your ability to retreat in your home is limited (you may be backed into a corner etc.) having more rounds is an asset, but not just for covering misses.  Knowing the safe fields of fire in your house is also very important.  You need to know where your backstops are, where you can and can't shoot.

great review Pete,

I wonder if you were limp wristing.  I got a G17 back in November. (Matt form RI)  I had the exact same problem with the first 2 rounds.  Now I'm 1500 rounds deep with only those 2 problems to speak of.  Great firearms.

Jerome and Jkwas--these are very good comments.  I'm not planning to blow off the first few rounds, I'm just acknowledging that the probability of the first one or two hitting and/or taking my attacker down is not 100%.  Again, it's my thinking, possibly flawed, but something I need to go with until the training I've scheduled takes place.  My wife and I have practiced where she will move to immediately and that is far off of the direction of fire (mine or an intruder's).    I've been assuming that walls don't offer any cover, only concealment, though I bet the instinct to assume they do offer cover is hard to overcome.

Regards to all, many thanks for listening.

Good Job with the review Pete.  A honest review that included great self perspective.  Something that will definitly be helpfull to new gun owners.  As you develop and learn the craft your confidence wll grow and that will help you a lot also.  Good Luck.

Really enjoyed this gun review...  Well done, Pete!

Maybe you were limp-wristing, but did you also have the Tac-Light installed during this range visit?
When you charged that first round from the magazine, did you chamber the round delicately?

Also, did you first disassemble the Glock for a cleaning and lubing, or did you take it straight from the box to the range?
