I have recorded some audio files that I would like to edit together and submit for a podcast.  They recorded as m4a files which play great in iTunes and sound pretty good if I do say so myself.

How can I either convert it to a usable format, or edit the m4a format to be able to submit?

QuickTime Pro is only $30 and will give you decent editing for cropping, exporting to different formats, etc. But you may find it limited for splicing stuff together, levels, etc. Mark likes Audacity an awful lot, and it's free- I'd look into that, first.

Google "m4a to mp3" or "m4a to wav". There are a lot of free conversion software available for download.

iPhone with 3.0 software update.....  I've listened to the audio on my computer and on the phone and it sounds amazingly clear....  no external mic, nothin.....  I'd be glad to email one of the clips to anyone that wants to try to edit them.....

I figured that I'd give it a shot, fully expecting it to sound like crap with all the dogs, cattle, and horses around me as I walked in and out of the barn....  there are a few times you can hear the dogs playing, and one time you can hear our stud nicker but thats it.... I am very happy with the audio that it does...

How do you edit the interviews 'SHELTON'Huh

If you don't use a Mac at home, I couldn't tell you.  My MacBook came with all the software I needed, but I don't know of any good m4a apps for a Windows machine.  Sorry.

itunes and my iphone 3g 3.0

I wanted to get a Mac, but since SolidWorks doesn't support Mac's OS for technical support, I had to go with a Windows machine, and they suggested Vista 64....  I know that its MUCH better than regular Vista and regular XP Pro for SolidWorks.
Unfortunatly its not as good for the Video and Graphic Production stuff that I enjoy doing... but thts the story of life I suppose.

In iTunes somewhere (don't know where on a Vista machine, I'm a Mac guy) there is a setting for importing. It needs to be set to MP3. After this is set it should just be a matter of right clicking on the sound file in iTunes. In the dialog that comes up will be a choice to create an mp3 version. Just select and you now have two versions, you can then drag the MP3 to Audacity or the like for editing.

Use the following program. It is the one I use for all my audio file conversions. They have a free version that you can use for I think 30 days. It works even much better than most of the programs that cost hundreds of dollars.

dBpoweramp Music Converter
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

    *  Huge range of audio codecs supported:    mp3, mp4, m4a (AAC, iTunes & iPod), Windows Media Audio (wma), Ogg Vorbis and FLAC
    * Preservation of ID Tags and Album Artwork, correct mapping of ID Tags between tag types (where possible),
    * Multi-CPU encoding support,
    * Easy folder & drive selection with Batch Converter,
    * DSP effect support (ReplayGain, Volume Normalize, including DirectX and VST effects),
    * Pro-orientated codecs: BWF Wave, Dalet, mp2
    * Windows Explorer integration: audio info tips & columns,

Thank you Hunter, I found the change that needed to be made in the preferences of my iTunes, made the change, right-clicked on the files and created an MP3 version....  worked great...

Now its time to try to play with some editing.

Thank you for the work you put together Jerome, I really appreciate it.  I have not been able to download it yet, as I'm on satillite internet and have caps that I ahve to worry about, as well as the speed is insanely slow and I can't interupt my wife who is working remote right now and killin the speed.
