Doc I have a CCW pending and I am wondering if I need to speak up if I roll up on a license check even if I don't yet have the permit? I often cary my handguns locked in a case due to security issues in my apartment. Am I required to notify?

Phil...
No, in NC,  you are not required to notify if you have it locked in a case and have no permit. If were me.. I wouldn't say a thing, unless asked, then explain that it is stowed locked (taking more that 2 steps to get too).
When you do get your permit in, you are obligated to tell the officer, by NC law.  It can be a bit unnerving at first, but I have found, in NC, that the officers I have encountered were stand up guys.  They knew the law and were professional about it.. except in one case at the beginning of the stop.. but after talking to someone else, he was 5x5 on it.  Most of the time, we end up talking about what guns we have, where we shoot and what our favorite firearms are... it is a fraternity, shooting..
I have been stopped quite a few times, I speak from experience of it........
