Hello all,
I Finally bought a G17rtf and like it a lot.  (Tom) I might be naming it soon.  It came with the standard plastic sights. I planned on getting aftermarket night sights to put on it.  The gun will be used for IDPA and possibly carry.  My current carry is a G30 with XS sights and I like them.  I would say, my biggest hurdle in shooting is finding the front sight quickly and xs helps.  Should I put XS sights on a gun for IDPA?  How much emphasis should I put on practicing with the same equipment I carry?  Does anyone use xs sights for IDPA?  I would say that for me IDPA is 60%+ defensive practice.  In other words I'm not a gammer just yet.

There's nothing wrong with your approach. It's a solid one. Xs Sights are allowed, and if you find they don't work for you they can alsways be changed. That's the nice thing about IDPA... it'll let you see how your entire system functions under some degree of stress.... before you have to use it for Real.

I shoot the match with a gen 3 G-17 which I installed Heinie straight 8's on.  My  cousin had XS sights on his...the one with the BIG DOT on the front post...it was fine up close but at distance that dot really covers up a lot of the target.  You may not be gaming it now but after you shoot a few matches you start to figure out that the more 0-zone hits you get the better your score will be.

Chris, Thanks for the thought.  I CAN always change them if I don't like them.  For what its worth what sights do you play with and what do you carry?HuhHuhHuh
Peter

Peter,
I prefer the SIG bar/dot system for most use... and the Advantage Tactical Sight for some use. All of my competition handguns have a red fiber optic front sight (which can be changed out to green for indoor/dim light matches) with a white bar on the rear. My carry guns have the front sight painted fluorescent orange with a white bar on the rear. This set up is quickest for my older eyes, but it doesn't mean it's the best for everyone. If you play with different combos you'll find what works best for you.
