Im pretty new as well, but didnt care for the xd gear holster. It didnt fit my gun belt very well.I got a Blackhawk cqc holster and love it.It has belt and paddle attachments and the belt attachment is adj. to your belt width. Its worked great for me,ALOT better than the Fobus it replaced. It is cut low in the front for easy draw for my tactical or service model. The xd mag pouch is working for me now but looking to upgrade.Check out bladetech, they have a idpa approved holster/mag pouch combo kit.I'm going to try it soon, hopefully.Like I said I'm pretty new,but this has worked for me. Good luck, just prepare for the addiction!Matt

Daeglan, If you're looking for a IDPA/USPSA competition holster get a straight drop Blade-Tech. They're as good as it gets. Chris Christian

Thanks Chris. I am also looking for what to look for in a carry rig. Maybe one day Ca. will get their heads out of their backsides and I can carry. I am more looking for how do I know what feels right? You put it on your hip or wherever and then what?
Yeah I know its a subjective thing. I am just looking for advice on judging holsters I guess.

I use a Comp-tac M-Tac for daily carry for my G-19 and a Galco ankle holster or a Wild Bill's pocket holster for my S&W 442. I do not carry my duty weapon, a G-21, anywhere but at work in a level 3 safariland raptor.
IMHO, make sure what you carry you can operate in the stress of a situation. It also needs some type of retention so that it will stay in the holster if you fall or become engaged in an affray with someone. There's a host of good holsters out there you just have to pick one that you can live with. If there are some gun shows in your area yo may try going to one. The vendors will gladly let you try one out. It will feel right when you have worn it for some time and you no longer think about it...it'll just be there.

Daeglan, The best advice for judging holsters is to put it on your hip and shoot it under stress. I use Blade Tech for my competiton guns. For carry guns I use a three slot pancake (Bianchi or similar). I've shot both in competiton and am comfortable with both. The leather pancake just carries CCW better. If you're buying a holster in the hopes that Kalifornia suddenly allows you to carry concealed, then get one made of metal.... that way it will be in good shape for you to pass off to your grandchildren... and then they can wait and hope that Kalifornia allows them to actually carry it. At that time (which is unlikely to occur) that can trade that one in on a real CCW holster. In the meantime, if you want to shoot competition (still legal in Kalifornia, I think?) get a Blade Tech. Yup we have competition... and we can carry in Kalifornia just have to be in a county that is not stupid like LA. Sadly I am in LA County... sigh. If i lived in San Bernadino or Bakersfield or Kern.... Hey at least its not as bad as Chicago. We can still buy spray paint.
