at least that is what I am telling my wife. I am going to shoot my first IDPA match this Saturday. Someone is graciously offered to let me use an OWB holster and mag holder. It is cold enough I will have a jacket as a cover garment. I think all I have left is ears, eyes, gun and ammo. I am very excited! And its all ProArms fault. Started with Massad's book...

Good luck!
Go smooth, even if it seems as if it's going slow...
Go SAFE...
Look and listen, because each shooter on each stage will be a lesson for you...
And enjoy!

...and, please, let us know what your experience was.

Best,
mas

Excellent.  I would be going to my second match this Saturday but I have the first part of the annual scout fund raiser that morning. I would echo Mas from my recent history, slow, smooth, steady, safe.  If I would have done a better job of that, my score would have been much better.  But, no matter what I think you will just have a great time and your brain will get a great workout.

Thanks for the support everyone. I too am nervous but excited. I also wonder if this will help with my wife's questions about why I want another gun.  Tongue

I am looking forward to learning. I didnt grow up around guns and do not have the time to take as much training as I would like. However, things like IDPA and a new work schedual that allows weekend classes, should help my confidence and skill.

It will definitly help your skill and confidence.I grew up around guns and have shot for years.I was a good shot, standing still,no stress, and no drawing from holster.Ive learned I know about an1/8 of what I thought I did.I will be attending some prof. training this summer. But until then idpa is a learning tool, not to mention fun as hell.Blaming Pro arms doesn't help much though, after the revolver episode I had to update. My wife refused to be mad at Mas Cheesy.Take care,Matt

Well, first day of IDPA went well. Ended up using an IWB holser and a barrowed mag pouch. I need to get my own so that I can practice my drawing and reloading as part of my dry fire practice. If I knew IWB was allowed, I could have used my own holster.

The day was really fun. There were many people, ended up with 12 people per squad, but I was able to learn from those in my group. Many had taken much more formal training than myself and I think there was even on sponsored shooter in the group. All were looking at my form and helping me find areas to improve. The hardest stage was on where we were shooting 26 yards from behind cover. Never done anything like that before with a pistol.

I also learned about my equipment. I was shooting a G19 that I have carried for a few years. In all the practice and range work I have done I had never had the slide close forward on me when inserting a new mag. It happend on one of the stages and I had to think where next to go. I also found hitting the mag release understress and in the wet to be more challenging. Need to work with the pistol a bit more before I decide if it is an ergo issue with the gun or a training issue with me. Maybe both.

I was able to get some videos taken with my camera. If anyone wants to see how a novice takes on IDPA, I uploaded them to http://www.youtube.com/user/soundlzrd

Thanks guys for the encouragement and advice!

Soundlzrd,
Welcome to the wonderful world of IDPA. Nice people. Helpful people. Fun people. It's about as much fun as you can legally have with a handgun with your clothes on. Or, maybe not. It can be addictive. We will be more than happy to answer any questions you might have regarding handguns, loads, equipment... although we don't do wardrobe questions.
Glad you had a good time. What took you so long to get involved?

Thanks Chris. After I get back from seeing family for the Christmas I plan on getting a Bladetech set up for my g19. And work with it for a while. Also need to keep listening to all the GRRN podcast.

As to what took me so long, not sure. Some of it was working weekends that prevented me from going, some was money. For a long time I wanted that next gun more than I wanted to become proficient with them. I do see how it could be addictive. There are two IDPA clubs that are very local, and if the wife allows, I hope to shoot in both almost every month. Not sure how I went from one match ever to two a month, but I don't mind.
