Hi Tony,

I enjoyed your post election thoughts regarding the future of gun rights in this country. In particular, you thoughts on reaching groups who are normally not a part of America’s gun culture is on target with what I believe will be a major challenge to overcome. As a Hispanic American and a citizen of Chicago, where gun rights are severely suppressed, I have personally witnessed how disconnected minorities are to the general gun culture and their gun rights. A lot of this has to do with how our local media and politicians have ostracized guns in our city, by linking all gun use to gang shootings and illegal crimes. Rarely do you read any reporting, by the Chicago papers, of any use of a firearm for self-defense.

But a bigger problem that I see is that there is an extreme lack of gun rights education and participation within the city, by gun rights group, to educate and empower citizens to act on their 2nd amendment rights and to use the political process to bring about changes that will finally allow citizens the right to self defense without criminal prosecution.

Honestly, if we do not focus our attention on urban cities like Chicago, we are going to have a difficult time moving our gun rights agenda forward.  Obama won over 60% of the Hispanic vote and over 90% of the African American vote in this election, and it is a well known fact that the US Census is predicting that by 2050, 54% of the US population will be minorities.

I am trying to do my part by speaking with other in my community about gun rights, running the Armed Citizens of Chicago blog site, being a member of NRA and state rifle associations, actively participating in the GRRN forum, and patronizing our local gun ranges.

What I am not seeing in our gun rights organizations and political parties, such as the Republican Party, is a comprehensive plan to stem the tide of a rapidly growing minority population towards the anti-gun Democratic Party.  There is a winning formula to regain our political power for gun rights; we’re just going to have to take these coming demographic changes a lot more serious than what I am seeing these days.

Regards,
Miguel

Great episode, keep up the great work!  I loved the fictional story about the woman protecting herself & her child.  There are actual events that are very similar such as this one that is a complete match other than the child:

Here's another very similar event:

And another good story about a woman who defends herself against a rapist who came back for a 2nd visit:

I listened to the call on your site,  it is chilling.  The example I used was from a very similar incident from my Probation Officer days around 8-9 years ago  I changed a few things around.  In that one the woman  had the police out several times but her ex-boyfriend(drug addict/thief) was always long gone by the time they got there.  PD said "get a gun".  She did and  when he came back armed with a knife she shot the guy, he survived and fled, and was later sent back to jail.  Also with her there was no time to call the cops.

The sad thing is that we hear this story over and over again, more often than not, it ends badly for the woman.  Most of the time you can just change the name and date and it matches up pretty well.

A lot of these women have been led to believe that the only thing they can do is get an order of protection and/or call the cops.  I can tell you from experience that most orders of protection are used after the fact to add charges on to the bad guy after he has beaten, raped or killed the victim.

So very true.  Like they say, when seconds count, the Police are only minutes away.  Everyone has the choice to either prepare themselves to be able to defend their families if such a need were ever to arise, or to be at the mercy of merciless thugs.  As for me & mine - we've opted to be prepared.  We hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.  Makes sleeping so much easier even while knowing that there are evil people working or preparing to work evil deeds out in the cover of darkness while we sleep.
