Maybe it's just me but this strikes me as one of the more asinine public policy decisions out of the countless many regarding 2nd Amendment rights in this state......

Very good reason why you don't want to be on a government list. Now it's been turned into a shopping list for criminals.

Outrageous!

At least we'll now have a list of the all the gang members and criminals in the state. [/sarcasm]

Typical Illinois mob politics.

What I want to know: why is the AP looking for a list of FOID cardholders?

I like to believe it's possible that there actually can do some investigative reporting and not make public the entire list.

If the AP is doing something like searching for all the anti-gun politicians who are trying to block the efforts of getting a concealed carry law in effect and find out if they have a FOID card. Then I think that would be a legitimate reason.

Past experience tells me media is not looking out for us.

Question:

Are they going to release the names of the FOID holders or all the information as defined in the statute?

(430 ILCS 65/6) (from Ch. 38, par. 83‑6)
Sec. 6. Contents of Firearm Owner's Identification Card.
    (a) A Firearm Owner's Identification Card, issued by the Department of State Police at such places as the Director of the Department shall specify, shall contain the applicant's name, residence, date of birth, sex, physical description, recent photograph and signature. Each Firearm Owner's Identification Card must have the expiration date boldly and conspicuously displayed on the face of the card. Each Firearm Owner's Identification Card must have printed on it the following: "CAUTION ‑ This card does not permit bearer to UNLAWFULLY carry or use firearms." Before December 1, 2002, the Department may use a person's digital photograph and signature from his or her Illinois driver's license or Illinois Identification Card, if available. On and after December 1, 2002, the Department shall use a person's digital photograph and signature from his or her Illinois driver's license or Illinois Identification Card, if available. The Department shall decline to use a person's digital photograph or signature if the digital photograph or signature is the result of or associated with fraudulent or erroneous data, unless otherwise provided by law.

The portion I emphasized in the section of the statute is considered Personally Identifiable Information, or PII, and is likely protected by either state or federal laws regarding Personally Identifiable Information (PII) data usage by those who collect it.

Just a thought, but there may be a law in place that will not permit the ISP to release the information.  ***OR***  There may be enough doubt to cause it to be held up in court until it can be sorted out.

If they let out that level of detail my prayers will commence as follows: Oh Lord let this be my winning lottery ticket when the class action suit bankrupts these jokers, and then let the people rise up in protest and demand constitutional carry!

Hmmm....an Illinois gun owner tells me that every Illinois peace officer needs a FOID card. So, are they going to publish home addresses of police families for gang bangers to target?

And if they're exempt, why publish anyone else's?

Decades ago in NH, the Concord Monitor and a Portsmouth-area paper (Foster's Daily Democrat) made it a ritual to publish lists of carry permit holders, with street addresses. When asked why, the editors would reply, "We feel the public has a right to know who walks among them with the power to kill them," or words to that effect.

I was one of many who testified at the State House that in the days and weeks after each publication, there would be a spate of burglaries in which some of the listed homes were targeted for gun theft. Thanks to the efforts of the NH State Rifle and Pistol Association and the Gun Owners of NH, the Legislature agreed with us and passed a law banning such publication and limiting such information to "need to know" status.

best,
Mas

Friend of mine sent a letter to Lisa Madagin and got the reply that what was contemplated was the release of name and expiration date of the FOID. Still, this isn't rational. BUT perhaps we can get a list of those who DON'T have a FOID and publish THAT - allow the BG's to know where they can go and NOT get shot.
