I'm very surprised the gun didn't go off.  I hope it was a fake gun for the dog's sake because the first thing I would expect the bad guy to do after the clerk lifted the dog over the counter would be to shoot the dog as he runs off.

I think a dog brings in a "primal" fear factor that helps most people loose their rational behavior. In the same manner as a WWII dive bomber should have never survived an attack run except for fear messing up the defenders.
