Just got a set of these ear muffs.  So much better than regular muffs or plugs.  Does anyone  else use this brand.  They were fairly inexpensive.  Howard Leight impact $49.99

?What brand are they - can't read it. They rather look like the old Peltor 6's.

Howard Leight's electronic muffs. Been using mine for about 3 years, at the range and around the house.  Really happy with them.

Am I the only one who really doesn't care for over the ear protection?

When shooting Cowboy, I use the custom molded, wad o' silicone, in-ear protection. However, I can't hear much, and they're uncomfortable after a while. I recently saw an add for custom - electronic - in ear plugs.  They amplify sounds and also clamp off excessive noise.  Supposed to be good, but the $350+ price...Well, hell; that's almost another gun!

Like the over the ears type when they can be used. They work well, are comfortable, and are easy to put on.

I used to be like that until i got these.  Regular over the ear were always to thick and I thought the limited my awareness of my surroundings.  I liked ear plugs but the either fell out or would get painfull.

Munck - when you start talking hearing protection nothing matches over the ear cups. If you don't really care, just about anything will help. But electronic ears will help you hear if you don't already have the best hearing, and at the same time protect you from those loud noises. The cowboy plugs deaden the sound, but are less effective at actually protecting your hearing. Only problem is that most electronics don't fit under a hat - so the reason you see all the CAS shooters with those plugs.

Incidentally, any hunters out there may find that the electronic ears will actually give you better warning of the coming of an animal.

Just come back from my favorite reloading store and almost picked up a pair. They were selling them for $55 but unfortunately after buying the reloading supplies that I needed there wasn't much cash left.

Think I'm going to add them to my long wish list.

Put them near the top of your list, Mark. They fall right behind having a gun in importance.

Can not be too high on the list right now due to replenishing my reloading supplies. Also I already have so many types of hearing protection.

Yup - I've had them for about a year and love them. Particularly handy is the Aux-in jack; I can plug in my cellphone, iPod or two-way radio. Perfect for listening to GRRN podcasts while shooting  Wink

They aren't "stereo" headphones though are they, meaning that there is not a microphone on each ear cup?

Yup - each cup has a microphone, so everything is in glorious stereo.

These work great and make going to the range a much better experience. I highly recommend them as it aids in communicating to my wife and letting her know what she can do to improve while shooting.

The only thing about electronic muffs is that they seem delicate.  I had a pair of Peltor's, and on the third time I used them I suddenly got an unbearable hissing sound in the right side.  I called Peltor, and they only warranty that product for 90 days.

Interesting experience. I have had two sets of Peltor 7's, and both have worked just exactly as prescribed. OTOH, I have a set of Peltor 6's, and they were lousy. I still have them, but would not trust them to actually do what they are suppose to.

?Which set did you have.

Purchased a set the other day and I do not like them. The major problem I have is there's no independent volume control when using the MP3 input. When you turn the volume up you also turn up the outside noise. It really needs independent volume controls.

Tested them at work which is a very noisy environment and I was not able to hear the audio coming my MP3 player well enough to understand what was being said. I imagine it's not going to be much better in the indoor range because the ventilation system can be very loud.

Mark, I use mine with a dinoPod Nano while mowing. I disable the iPod's volume limiter and crank it up. I then turn down the earphone's volume all the way - but not off. I can hear the GunDudes just fine over the mower.

Even over my wife.
