i am looking for info on modifying the plate so that it wont eat my thumb when reloading.

If you posted pictures of the part your concerned with, might be able to offer some assistance.

Ok, will take some in a little while.  It would be very easy to just modify it to not chew on my thumb but I am afraid that I might do so in away that could have unforeseen consequences with feeding or cambering.

It grabs my thumb the rounded tip of the floor plate.  I was thinking of grinding the tip down about. .040" to get just a little more clearance.

As an 870 armorer, I would say that rounding the edge would be ok, but if you need to take some off, take as little as possible. You can't put it back if you take too much. Rounding the edge should keep it from feasting on your thumb.
