It was world news a few months ago when a crazed man released his menagerie of wild animals upon his community, and then committed suicide. It was  left to the Muskingum County, Ohio Sheriff’s Department under Sheriff Matt Lutz to contain the dangerous animals before they could maul or kill citizens.

A link is provided here for the report by the Sheriff’s Department.  Here, we present the story told by those who were there. A detective who had to blast a lion at close range with a 12 gauge. A deputy who killed a charging bear with a single shot from his Glock .40, just an instant before the bear reached him. The patrol and SWAT deputies who hunted through the night with their patrol rifles and SWAT precision rifles, until the last threat to their community was extinguished. And the high Sheriff, who had to answer for it all.

Thanks to our friend, associate, and consultant Keith Jones, who participated in the discussion.

Bloody chilling!

I could hear the Deputy reliving the events out at the farm. I can relate to this story, I lived in the East Zanesville, Ohio area for about 7-8 years, near the place! We still keep in touch with a friend that worked there.

Mas, very professional job in the interviews. Both the Deputy and the Sheriff responded well to your very astute but dispassionate questions.

Thank you Mr. Ayoob for yet another job well done.

Really liked this one, thanks. Those guys did a great job in a crazy situation. Made me wonder if maybe the .223/.556 platform is a little light for what police *might* be called to do.

It certainly can be. At the same time, LE is always concerned about ammo that overpenetrates and the liability that comes with it. Many, if not most, 5.56 loads will penetrate in building materials less than most major caliber handgun ammo due to the light weight and fragmentary nature of many of the bullets. M193 (55 gr. ball) is a great example.

Just wanted to say thanks, this episode was probably my favorite to date, certainly in top 5, I have listened to it over a dozen times.

AR's with Vmax sure worked better than I would have suspected on those types of animals.

I wasn't surprised by the 40 S&W performance, the 40 is about equal to 38-40 cartridge that was used lot back in the day.

I also remember seeing online sometime in late '90s a report by IIRC Alaskan State Troopers, were they had done a lot of research and testing, including shooting bear skulls, that concluded that service caliber pistols were fine on bears, but most people shot to high on the head of a bear.

They said to aim for the nose, forehead on bear is lot lower than people, and more sloped, so most headshots would tend to skid on skull instead of penetrate, unless placed around nose.

If anyone can find link to that report I would appreciate it, or citation to dead tree version, I have tried severl times over the years to find it again and not been able to.

This was a great podcast! I often bring this up the officer who dropped the bear with his 40 in the gun store where I work. Mainly because many of the guys who work there cling to myths. This was an amazing shot but it laughs in the face of many of the thought processes involved with bears. Don't misunderstand me, I understand large bore revolvers will have a more powerful (whatever that means) cartridge. It depends on your school of thought, a lot of medium power rounds or a few powerful rounds.
