On episode 29, Eric asked what our favorite shoot 'em movie is.

Instead of emailing him, I started a thread so we can share....

He mentioned HEAT.  That is certainly one of my favorites.

Another one that is a favorite of mine is LAST MAN STANDING.  This is a pretty old Bruce Willis movie that probably didn't get good reviews but I think it is very good, especially for the 1911 lovers.

What are everyone else's favs?

Last Man Standing was a not horrible (but not good either) remake of A Fistfull of Dollars.  A Fist Full of Dollars was a rather good remake of Yojimbo by Akira Kurisowa. Not bad for the 1911 lover to be sure.

-Heat is awesome.
-While the scene was borrowed from classic cinema, the train station shootout in The Untouchables was done very well.
-The Wild Bunch was wild
-Hard Boiled may be the most over the top shoot'em up I have ever seen.

"I lied."

Classic!  I had completely forgotten about Last Man Standing- which is funny considering I thought about it every time I holstered my 1911 for the first 2 months I had it.

I also love Last Action Hero- when Jack Slater comes into the real world and says, "Here's another explosion for your movie, kid."  He shoots the taxi with his .50AE Desert Eagle...  And nothing happens.  He looks at his gun, and just can't figure out what's wrong.  I still laugh every time.

Kuffs, starring Christian Slater.  "I need something really big that holds a lot of bullets."
The clerk at the store shows him a Beretta 92, and tells him it's capacity.
"Great.  I'll take two."

Technically not a Shoot-em-up, but "True Lies" has to be my favorite movie of all time.

All the Clint Eastwood westerns. Except for "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly." Just didn't like that one.  The bus at the end of "The Gauntlet".

While not really a "shoot 'em up" I like Hollow Point.  Its funny and there is quite a bit of shooting.

As far as Last Man Standing I didn't think it was bad, not did I think it was a bad remake of Yojimbo.  I watch both often enough, and I think they pulled it off.  Plus I really like 1911's.

For Shoot'em Ups....

1. Boondock Saints - excellent film wrapped around excellent gun fights
2. Bad Boys II - crappy film wrapped around excellent gun fights
3. Most of Chow Yun Fat's Hong Kong work - especially with Johnny Woo directing
4. Red Dawn - that's my 80s fix  Grin

The Matrix
3:10 to Yuma (excellent shoot 'em up movie)
Gran Torino (OMG, a Hollywood actor pumps the shotgun before engaging...amazing)
Quigley Down Under (I said I had no use for them, not that I didn't know how to use them)
The Last of the Mohicans (if you EVER wanted to see an example of covering fire...this was it)

Kill Bill Vol 1 was pretty darn good also! Uma was some kind of bad! More of a Hack-Em-Up than a Shoot-Em-Up.

Man, there are some really good movies on this list!  I think I'm going to have to take Red Dawn and Boondock Saints with me to work tonight!

"The way of the gun" is one of my favs in terms of gunfights.  Technically it is one of the most brilliant staged fights on screen.  It was choreographed by the director's brother who was a navy seal.

The only part of Way of the Gun I really liked was when they punched Sarah Silverman at the beginning.  Twice.  God, I could watch that all night.  LOL.

"Equilibrium". Freakin' awesome movie.

How can you go wrong with a film that used a made-up martial art called the "gun kata"

Eric talked about 'Shoot 'Em Up' - despite the anti-gun message I loved it, it was so over the  top and horrible, but I loved it.  Mindless entertainment.  I mean, come on, he made eating a carrot tough, and then killed someone with it!  It doesn't get any better than that.

Not really a shoot 'em up movie, but I enjoyed the heck out of it... Can you name it?

"... Alright you Primitive Screwheads, listen up! You see this? This... is my boomstick! The twelve-gauge double-barreled Remington. S-Mart's top of the line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about a hundred and nine, ninety five. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart. You got that?"

yeah - good stuff, got to like old Bruce... "...Good...Bad...I'm the guy with the gun.."  when I was in the Air Force a few of us would go out and get loaded then come home and watch the Evil Dead and laugh our ass off.

as far as shoot 'em up....

Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels
Reservoir Dogs
Pulp Fiction
Last Man Standing
Any of the Eastwood spaghetti westerns, or non-spaghetti for that matter.
They Call Me Trinity (Terrence Hill, man that guy can eat some beans!)
Blade was good
The Underworld series is decent - Kate Beckinsale is just plain sexy.
and you can't beat Desporado, Salma was too gorgeous in that

There are tons of others of course.  These are just the ones that floated to the top of my deprived brain.

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms. disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed one." – Thomas Jefferson (quoting from Italian Criminologist Cesare Beccaria's essay "On Crimes and Punishment" published in 1764).
