Panhead and TJ, if you think plinking with your six-guns is fun, we've gotta get you out to a SASS match!  Nothing better than racing 2 six-guns, a lever, and a splattergun with some of the finest people who ever burned gunpowder. Most fun you can have with your spurs on!

CF, I plan on it - eventually. There's a club that does SASS about an hour from me, but I need to get more equipment first. I've gotta get a second pistol and I don't have an old-style shotgun yet. My only "cowboy" guns so far are my Uberti SAA (that I'll pick up today as soon as I can get away from the office) and my Winchester 94 carbine in .44. I'm working on it though!

Nope.

Get yer donkey to a SASS match ASAP.

  • Dollars to Donuts you'll have people throwing firearms at you for your use.  It's the Cowboy Way.
  • You can try a bunch of guns and leather to see which ones fit you best. This is NOT a one size fits all game.
  • You can see if you like the competition before you sink a bunch into your bang sticks. However, I betcha you will.
  • Think of all the fun you'll be missing!

If you're anywhere near the aptly named LA Basin, I can direct you to several great resources.

CF,

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll get out as soon as I can. I'm in the central valley, 'bout an hour north of Bakersfield, where Five Dogs Range holds SASS matches.

Great club -- almost as good as mine.

Look up Mad Trapper of Rat River - and say "Hay!"

Well; I took my new Ubertu SAA out to the range today - only had about a half-hour before the range closed and one box of ammo - but got a chance to get a feel for it. I likey!

Can't say what it is, but like the lever-gun, there's just something about it ....

LOL!!  I took a bunch of pics, but I couldn't get photobucket to work on my phone. They're coming, eventually.

Funny story, I think the Uberti got me out of a ticket. Got pulled over for speeding on the way to the range. While CHP is walking up to my car I'm going through my script of what to say, hands visible, tell him I have a CCW and am carrying on my right hip. I look to my right and realize the Uberti's just sitting in the open on my passenger seat. Don't want the first thing CHP sees when he walks up to my car to be a gun just sitting there, when he doesn't know me from Adam. So I reached over and covered the SAA with a newspaper.

So he walks up to passenger window, I tell him I'm carrying and told him about the unloaded revolver on my passenger seat, and he was like "Ok, and...?". So we're chatting while I'm getting my license and registration together, (turns out I took his deposition a couple weeks ago), and he asks if he can see the Uberti. Of course I gave him the ok, and he reached into the window and grabbed from my seat a zipped up soft-sided gun case. "Careful," I told him, "that one's loaded, that's my S&W 686, the uberti's over there.". So now I've got a gun stuffed in every crack & crevasse in my car.

We laughed and talked about guns, he told me about his single-action and eventually he handed my license back and told me I've got a taillight out and to be careful.

Overall a positive experience. And no speeding ticket!

Wholly Carp!

Here in coastal Kali, I'd be picking a cop's gun barrel out of my ear for "a gun stuffed in every crack & crevasse in my car." Your living in the Central Valley probably helped -- things get saner the further away from salt water -- and also the CCW.

I'm real religious about locking up the guns and ammo separately when traveling in the SUV. Once had a dose of the cold sweats when I found a gun case that hadn't been completely locked.

Be sure to take the Chippie with you to Five Dogs!

I usually am too (at least for guns not on my person, legally) but I was in a hurry and wasn't thinking. Now, I'm heading for the bay area for the weeken, so I had better be on my A game and be extra conscientious about keeping concealed CONCEALED, or else I will end up with a cops barrel in my ear!
