Jim, I was looking at NorthStar's website and was considering trying some of their 9mm bullets.  What will I have to do differently when reloading, shooting, and cleaning vs. normal jacketed bullets?  It seems that there is a considerable cost savings but I was just unsure if there was some burning negative to using them in a semi-auto, or during reloading or keeping the gun clean, etc....

Good question! All you really will have to do, is clean your gun(s) pretty well... Then reload and use data for lead bullets of the proper weight. I am beginning to believe that proper fit is the most important part of recipe. Jeff Chapin knows this, and will sell you a product that's the best he can make. If I didn't cast already, I'd be buying from him. He's trying so hard to get all the business he can get that he's now selling ingots of recycled range lead to casters like me.

I intend to help him as much as I can, with getting the word out about NorthStar.

Let me say this, to try and dispell some of the myth's that are out there about shooting lead...

I just cleaned my Dan Wesson Model 15 after shooting it for two thousand (2,000) rounds without cleaning it. I put a dry patch through the bore, and got absolutely no lead on the patch.

I don't mean to make it look like I'm yelling, I'm just stating the facts. If you go to Facebook, then The Reloading Room, (it's public, you should be able to see it) then go into the Maintenance and Refinishing Folder, down near the bottom you're going to find a picture of that patch.

(It'd be a lot easier if you'd just join the Group and let me know who you are.)

As you know by now, I'm sure we're connected over there, and you've been added to The Reloading Room. Thanks for making the effort.

Hey Jim! I'm casting my own out of recycled wheel weights, and get quite a bit of lead fouling in the barrel and chambers (.357 shooting .38 rounds) The leading is much more severe in the chambers. Thinking this is due to shooting the .38 case in a .357 chamber. Any ideas? Do I need to harden my lead? If so, with what and where can I order it? I had the same issue shooting .45 semi wad cutters out of my 1911 (leading the barrel) but I also had an issue with bullet tumble on the .45. Thinking that might be a sizing issue... I size and lube my bullets through an old Lyman 45 Lubri-sizer, but had the same issue when I've tumble lubed and pan lubed...

And to the OP, don't know what gun you're shooting, but Glock specifies jacketed only through their barrels due to the type of rifling they use... however, Kahr (with same type rifling) only cautions that lead bullets can cause additional fouling and recommends special attention to cleaning after using them.  Have always shot Berry's through my Glock with fantastic results.

Hello Kevin...

I have a link to a document I created over in The Reloading Room (the official Facebook page for Reloading Radio)

Pb Blocker Barrel Treatment

I ask that you read my document, that I created about this whole issue... If you go to the link there are further links from there that contain photographic results of my using Pb Blocker in my Stock Glock 22 barrel.

All I can say to the statement about Glock recommends that jacketed bullets only be used, is that on my own intitive, taking full and complete responsiblity for my gun and my safety, blatantly ignored those recommendations... However, you have to follow your own guide... I do not recommend that anyone do as I've done... You be your own judge, once you see the data and the photos...

Jim, thanks a bunch for the link. I'll order some and, since I seriously know how much my barrels lead right now, I'll give you a report when I'm done. Thanks for all the info on one of my favorite topics...
Kevin, sick of rubbing lead out of barrels...
