Enjoyed the show immensely.
As someone which occasionally has to wear body armor for work I had actually been waiting for an episode like this.

For a long time I have used a vest with from and rear 1/4" steel plates with a NIJ III rating.
I was always a bit spooked by the things that could possibly go wrong with Kevlar.
That being said I was just handed a new vest by a coworker.
(I think they are feeling bad that I lug around so much extra weight)

The new vest is made of something called " Dyneema/Twaron ".

I am curious what, if anything someone can tell me about this material.  does it fall apart in sunlight as if it were a vampire? Does it melt from moisture like the Wicked Which?
Should I stick with the steel?
Any info would be great thanks.thanks

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyneema

We used Dyneema/Spectra lines for our spinnaker guys and sheets.  Small diameter, light weight, insanely strong, with very low stretch under load.  However, they were a stone pelosi to coil and stow - very stiff. Care had to be taken not to kink them. Overall, good stuff.  They're now replacing standing rigging usually made out of Stainless wire with  Dyneema.  Lighter weight and less stretch than wire.

Vests? - sounds like a great use. Daddy wants.

Hmmmm.  Given those marine applications I am inclined to think it doesn't have the same issues with moisture.

That correct?

The line had an outer cover, but that was for handling and abrasion resistance. I don't believe there was any special encapsulation.  The line core of Dyneema/ Spectra was pretty much just naked white/translucent braided fibers. We used the lines hard for three seasons and they were still on the boat when we sold her.

And yeah, they got VERY wet.

Dang, Doc! I wish we had covered this topic last year when we first started talking about it! Great discussion.

Listening to the show, it does make Kevlar sound fragile. Is it really that easy to compromise or did we hit that point too hard?
