Interesting question.
I would also wonder how this all would have played out with today's 24/7 media. It is almost one of those "made-for-TV" moments that the news media would love to flash about the nation. And like the recent Maryland court decision on 2AR, it would make a lot of lefties nervous.

I think the GOP, like the NRA, is terribly focused on what seems most likely to win. They are not taking into account the feeling in the country, only attempting to harness some of the discontentment to a victory. But by-and-large they don't want to change things much.
Much of the populace, OTOH, wants some real change, not hopey/changey. They don't get that, just as the NRA didn't get that Heller needed to go to the SCOTUS. The NRA was too afraid of losing to recognize the inherent argument, and the GOP is acting much like that. Too much statistics, not enough heart.
