Really, really great show.

Kudos to Average Joe for posting his favorites and good naturedly accepting the inevitable (and fun) "You are such a bag of crazy" comments.

I scratched out up my own bag of crazy (situation specific) 3 Gun lists while waiting for data from a rat-bastard who had already snuck out of work early for the 4th of July holiday.

Shiite Hits the Fan 3 Guns:
Rifle:             Marlin 1894C Stainless .357 Lever
Pistol:            Ruger GP100 SS .357 4”
Shotgun:       Mossberg 590 Special Duty/ Persuader
Comments:    Light, hard hitting, robust, reliable, and stone axe simple for TEOTWAWKI

Big Sis Only Allows 3 Guns:
Rifle:             AR-15 – With lots of uppers and mags
Pistol:            Glock G20 or G22 (depending on hand size) – With losta barrels and mags
Shotgun:       Mossberg 500 – With (seeing a pattern here?) lotsa barrels
Comments:    Flexibility

First 3 Guns:

Rifle:             Ruger 10/22 – Eventually Moded Into an Appleseed Liberty Training Rifle
Pistol:            Browning BuckMark or a Ruger 22/45 if you’re never going to clean it
Shotgun:       Benelli M2: Soft shooting semi with the ability to swap barrels
Comments:    Training tools – and FUN

Competition 3 Guns:
Rifle:             AR-15
Pistol:            S&W M&P 9mm
Shotgun:       AR-15 Pattern MKA1919
Comments:    Coming standard

Cheap 3 Guns:
Rifle:             Mosin-Nagant 93/30
Pistol:            Glock G17 Surplus
Shotgun:       Savage Bolt Action 12ga Shotty
Comments:    Cheeeeeeeap

Enjoy!  And remember: I've been called worse by better.

Happy Independence Day!   Blow some sh!t up!

One of the things I meant to say was that my list was not the be all, end all, and I want to encourage everyone to think about what they need to fill out their battery for relevant contingencies.  And please, let us know what you come up with.

Doc

This was absolutely a great show. I really enjoyed the way you aj broke down the different considerations you needed to have based on where you lived and how that affected the choice of guns. More of this type of information is exactly what I'm looking for. Keep up the great work.

Outstanding episode! Overall a very important point was made- Many factors need to be considered when looking to purchase the "right" firearm, there is no such thing as a "one size fits all" gun.

As always- great work Doc and AJ!!!

Just caught up with this episode.  It was an interesting contrast, WRT shotgun choice, with what the Pro Arms gang discussed during their Defensive Shotgun show.  Especially given the strong opinions regarding .410 shotguns, pistol grips and effectiveness of bird shot.

I would lean a bit more toward the stick to 20 gauge, regular stock and #1 or 00 buck.  Did AJ have any examples or research to back up his choices or were these just experiential and personal opinions?

Thanks

At one time or another I have owned all the firearms listed in this topic with the exception of the 45-70.  I have shot a friend's customized Marlin 45-70 and it was an incredible machine launching a big cartridge that was very popular in the Idaho/Montana area I was living at the time.

I had posted this comment on Doc's website, but since Joe is commenting over here I figure I will paste it here:

I have to say I disagree with Joe on the Glock 19 for his Condo Defense pistol. If we are just talking about Home Defense why would you not go Glock 17? You get 2 more rounds and a longer site radius which is more likely to help a person be accurate in a stressful situation. Price is the same as the Glock 19, and since we aren't considering it as a carry pistol I see no reason to choose a 19 over a 17. If it is a dual role gun for carry and home defense then there is an argument for the 19 over the 17, but that being said I carry my 17 concealed on occasion and it is doable (though more difficult to conceal than a 19).

Wow!  If the recommendation of the G19 is the only thing you disagreed with then you are letting me off easy.

I recommend the G19 for two reasons:
1. It is easier to carry if the owner decides at some point to obtain their permit.
2. In close quarters if a scuffle breaks out and the bad guy tries to grab the slide there is less room for him to get a hold on (if he has large hands he may not be able to get a full hand around it).  If he does get a hand around the pistol and our hero quickly pulls the pistol back toward himself that action will cause the front sight to jam into the bad guys hand.  Having done this with blue guns during gun retention drills I know that it might cause enough pain to get the bad guy to let to or if he hasn't completely gotten his hand around the slide the retraction of the front sight through his grip may stop him from getting a better hold.  I know from this experience that ripping that front sight into the base of someone's hand or through their grip can draw blood.  Another way to say this is that during the retention drills the G17 was easier to wrench away from the hero than the shorter G19.
