Laugh at the Bastards!!!

« on: May 15, 2012, 02:09:28 PM »

Michael Bane has been let loose in the candy store NRA Firearms Museum. He's got a shot of a pristine Winchester 1894 with a factory mounted Maxim silencer. "TR ordered this gun from Winchester for those occasions when he didn't want to annoy his upscale neighbors like the DuPonts with a little plinking." .30 WCF (thuty-thuty) plinking is plinking with athoritaaay

Ol' Teddy (the good Roosevelt) sure knew his firearms.

Go ahead and drool: TR's Silencer

Out-freaking-standing!  That is exactly what I need to add to my collection, a suppressed 30-30.  Why the heck didn't I think of this before?

That ol' Teddy, he was one smart bear.

When you think about it, a lever is just about the best type of firearm for a suppressor: with a locked bolt, so there's no extraneous action noise or venting gases, and the lever's quick second, third, fourth... shot capability.

Great weapon!

Still have the issue of the supersonic boom to deal with but that's beside the point I guess. Silencers are interesting. Some of their benefit is a simple decrease in overall noise, not making them noiseless. If you've ever shot a suppressed .22, you find the only one that is "noiseless" is the subsonic round. Shoot a high vel round and you get that unmistakable crack of a firearm.

You know, there are SO many cool weapons - and SO many stupid government rules about why we can't own them.

If I did my math correctly, the speed of sound is about 1126 fps. None of my loading manuals get anywhere near that low. So subsonic thuty-thuty may not be attainable.  Still a pretty neat lever.

I can just see Teddy; "Franklin, you little prig, run out a 100 yards and hold up this target. Bully!"

Oh, I hope I didn't imply that somehow you could get a .30-30 to be subsonic. Be a very empty case.

Love the pic of sending Franklin out to hold the targets. But do remember that Teddy was a pretty serious progressive his own self. Just not as destructive as his cousin.

Nope Dev, your post triggered the thought: I wonder if I could roll my own subsonic .30-30?  The answer: Oh, hell no!  Although... there's the subsonic .300 Blackout...

Moot point, as I live in $18.6B in the red (how appropriate) Kalifornia.  Suppressors are banned, as are all other NFA items.
