I remember a while back you were talking about what type of lube you used for your guns, but I can't remember what it was or in which episode. Thinking about what I should be using for my M&P

For years I've used Militec grease and oil, http://www.militec-1.com/

Lately, I've been using All Temp Tactical Lube (Levi interviewed on my podcast several months ago) and I really like it!  http://alltemptacticallube.com/

Or you can consider getting a quart of 2-cycle synthetic oil for all of $5 and it will last you the rest of your life.

Dev.. yes and it works very good.  So does regular gun oil.

I hear folks talk about how good an oil works for their guns..
So what is the claim to fame of these specialty oils and lubricants.
I read some bond to the metal, which may be true.. that may not be such a good idea in the long run.  I hear you get longer time between cleanings.. but why would you want to do that..I want mine clean.  I hear they withstand temperature better.. well that is true with some oils, but unless you are shooting a fully automatic weapon in a steady stream, why would that really matter.. too hot and the barrel will warp anyway.
I have used hoppes, outers, marvel mystery, motor oil (if I was out shooting and the gun was a little dry, a drop or two works fine)... for decades and have never had a problem.
What am I missing?

Absolutely nothing, except perhaps, like the rest of us, from time to time the target.

I've always used BreakFree CLP.  It has worked for me for over 15 years all over the world.  The only place I could see it may be a problem is in sub-zero whether.  I've never had to operate when it's that cold, so I couldn't tell you if it would work or not.

I like the CLP because it works for everything (KISS principle), and that if I leave some on the gun after cleaning it won't be that big a problem.  I've left it on guns for years without problems in a safe.  Other oils and cleaners I've used (including Hoppes #9) have turned to sticky jell after sitting for a long time.  I've been given and told to use "miracule" oils before, some will work better at one job then CLP, but I haven't found anything that will do all three as well.

Really I just use it because it works and it's super simple.  Almost everything out there will work really well when used correctly.  I'm a little worried about putting things on my guns that weren't designed for guns, but would use motor oil in a pinch.

I never liked CLP even when I was in the Army in the sand box we always used regular grease. I still use regular grease, nothing fancy just a tube from auto parts store or farm store with molly and rated for high temperatures.
Specialty gun lubes are a money making deal for the lubrication industry. There are only so many plants that make lubricants in the entire country. They sell slightly differing recipes in wildly varied packaging. You are paying for the packaging not necessarily the product inside.

Find what works and use it. If you like oil use oil if you like grease use grease, if you want to spend the $$ for the so called gun lubes have at it. I like grease because it stays where it is put and oil runs down and is gone.

Expat -

Think about it for a second. 2-cycle oil is made for an engine that is basically a heat producer and air cooled. ?What is a gun (a heat producer that is air cooled). Works just fine.

Militec oil and grease has worked very well for me for 7+ years.  For Glocks, M&P's, XD's, almost any decent lubricant seems to work well.  I used the Militec grease on my 1911's when I owned them and it worked great.  However, for my AR 15, nothing works better (that I've tried) than the All Temp Tactical Lube, worth the money.
