Like alot of you out there I have a 9mm semi-auto pistol.  Its accurate, cheap to fire and with the right ammo a real "deterrant" to those who intend to do bad things.  I was thinking it was long overdue I picked up a "carbine" rifle to pair up with this.  The ones I have seen are relatively expensive, save the Hi-Point carbine.  How are the ballistics on 9mm out of carbine rifle?

Just curious if anyone has picked a 9mm carbine, and what they recommend or NOT recommend lol.

Yours in health,

I owned a hi-point carbine a couple of years ago.  I bought it for $100 (that includes tax and BG check!) at a local pawn shop.  As far as a gun to plink with or to teach people to shoot a rifle, I thought it did great.  Worked 100% with all sorts of ammo.  I usually pulled out the trusty 10/22 with new shooters, but the hi-point in 9mm recoiled very little, was a blast to shoot, and handled very nicely.  I think if you were looking for a home defence weapon you can do much better that a 9mm carbine. If that's what you have I think it can work, but I wouldn't go out an buy a 9mm carbine for home defence.  You get the length and weight of a rifle and the ballistics of a pistol-not the best combo.  Like Mas says-the rifle or shotgun is the artillery.  You want artillery with enough power to stop whomever is threatening you or your family right now-something a 9mm has done before, but not with the consistency of a 12/20 gauge shotgun or a rifle.  In short-they can be cheap and fun to shoot-but not the ideal self-defense piece in my opinion.
I would buy a cheaper 9mm carbine (like the hi-point) for fun, or something a bit nicer (and a larger magazine capacity) like a lone wolf G9 for competition.

A while back I picked up a Lone Wolf AR lower and matched it with a Rock River 9mm Upper.  Works great and shoots great--I have no issues with it.  I like how it takes the same magazines as my Glock 19 and has the controls in the same places as regular AR's.  I also have a Beretta CX4 in 9mm.  I really like the compact size of it and the overall ergonomics and balance.  I have red dot sights on both and really enjoy shooting both of them, but usually prefer the Beretta.  The 9mm AR is nicer when it comes to larger magazines; the large magazines feel more natural placed in front vs hanging out of the grip.  I have not shot the hipoint carbines but have only heard good things about them and would not hesitate in buying one for plinking.

Sorry I missed this thread!
Going from a 4"bbl to an 16" bbl, with a 124 grain bullet, you might see about 180fps gain.  When you get to 18" the friction starts slowing the bullet down.
As opposed to a 125gr .357,  which gains about 500+fps at said lengths with increased speed even up to 20", friction need not apply Smiley !!

Sorry I missed this thread, too.  I have had a Kel-Tec SUB-2000 9mm carbine for a couple of years now.  It accepts Glock magazines, including the 33 round Glock mag, which is (pun intended) a blast to shoot.  I took it to Bob Mayne's and Ben Branam's Beyond Concealed Carry class last November and Ben shot it.  He liked it so well that, last I heard on his podcast, he was considering buying one.  I love mine; it's rugged, I have 6 Glock 33 round mags for it (bought for $29 ea. before the big price increases) and several of the Glock 17 and S & W mags with lower round counts.
