Laugh at the Bastards!!!

« on: August 19, 2012, 11:00:47 PM »

Let's Take Tennessee Jeedd'ss fun thread "Guns You Just Enjoy for the Sheer Heck of It" one step further: What's You Next Gun For the Sheer Heck of It?

I'll start: I don't know.

I've got a bunch of competing choices:
  • I (kinda) need a shootable Winchester Model 12 for SASS Wild Bunch by Jan13. It'll be good to take a load off the Chinchester 1897 splattergun. Like the wifey, the '97's getting cranky in her old age
  • I'm thinking about finally getting an EBR. I wanna play Barbies with the Cool Tactical Kidz
  • Marlin's back in the Lever business.  It might be time to get that 1894C .44 Mag thumper for Home Defense/ Shi'ite Hits the Fan. Wife has a '94 in .357, but she's girlied it up.
  • 10/22 Takedown. Do I need another 10/22? No.  Do I want another 10/22? HELL YES!!!
  • A shootable/ collectable Springfield 1903 or 1903A3 to add to my military hysterical collection
  • A shootable Winchester 1894 Non-Texas Non-Ranger Non-Commemorative
  • CZ 455 22LR bolt to help me do something I should be doing more of: shooting

That's my Wish List.  What's yours?

M1A Super Match (actually pretty much any M1A) is a gun I would love to have. I actually had a SOCOM 16 and then a basic M1A but sold them.  What a bonehead move THAT was.

S&W model 29 and Colt Python are both on my wish list for future and I'm not really even a wheel gun guy.

Maybe a few more 1911's too!

Man, this has the look of a fun thread.  Thanks Charlie!  Here's what I'm thinking about:

- With a birthday coming up, my next heck-of-it gun is an S&W 629 I had re-barreled by S&W from 6 inch to 4 inch, with an eye towards CCW (using high speed 44 Special rounds instead of 44 mag).  I'm currently polishing it up nice and shiny with Mother's Mag polish, getting it reflective-shiny.  I want a potential bad guy to be able to see his face amongst the holes in the front of the cylinder.

- If I hear ANY good reports from recent consumers about Marlin getting it's lever-action act back together, I want to get an 1894 lever action in either 357 or 44 mag (haven't settled on which, yet, leaning towards 357).  Stainless if I can find one (again, shining it up with polish as above).  Don't need one (don't hunt much, not a cowboy action shooter...yet) but I've kicked myself too many times for not getting one back before their quality control fell off.

- Ruger Bearcat 22.  Another I-don't-need-one gun, but I think those little 22 single action revolvers look like a TON of fun.  If Ruger would ever come out with one in 32 H&R or something similar, I will buy one the very next day.  Otherwise, I will probably get one just because it looks like a lot of good-cheap fun.

This weekend's Tom Gresham's GunTalk had a quick discussion about Marlin.  Remington is now producing the 1894C's again. (Not is SS yet, tho) Read another blog/ board that said the new-made Marlins are definitely superior to the last Marlin years and the early Remington production. Sound like they have the production issues caused by the move and the new CNC tooling pretty much in hand.

Remington seems committed to enhancing the historic Marlin brand. That's good great news.  I have two Marlins, and I'd like a couple more. The 1894C in .357 is a brilliant little rifle.

Charlie --- What did your wife do to "girlie up" that '94 in .357?  I'm a little scared to ask, but am starting to get concerned about my daughter wanting a rifle in pink, so thought I'd see what trouble might be ahead.

The loverly and talented (just ask her) Charlotte Foxtrot appropriated my Marlin '94C via Eminent Domain. She then proceeded to mark her territory much like my German Shepherd does: she installed a custom neon pink leather butt cover - with fringes - on the poor thing. Electrode-Up-The-Damn-Butt Pink, according to our club's Match Director.

As usual, I knew better than to say anything. However, we shoot together in SASS matches. During one yearly match, my Win '66 went TU with a nasty split case jam. I had to borrow her Marlin to finish the match. I stepped up to the line with that rifle and it's butt ugly butt cover, and the TO started to snigger. God bless 'em, SASS cowfolk are the finest in the world, but they can smell blood in the water like a Great White Shark. By the time I finished the remaining four or so stages with that pink gun, the counters were doing synchronized prancing to the Village People's YMCA.

Yeah.

God, it's nice to hear you guys talking about getting another gun!

I myself just don't have a hankering for much of anything. Except maybe an Ed Brown in a Commander length and a couple 8 round mags. I would accept a really nice Nighthawk, but the Ed Brown is my personal preference.

CF, you should just get a Chink 97. It's only about $300 and you really don't care how badly you misabuse it 'cause it's still a Chinese knock-off. But it will shoot. ?You don't bring back-up guns with you when you go SASSing.

Yeah.

Wow!  Very funny story.  I guess that's the price one pays for the joys of a spouse participating in the shooting sports.  My young daughter is getting interested in shooting, but really really really wants something in pink.  I am reluctantly looking at some of the kid sized 22 rifles in pink, but if that's what it takes to get her accustomed to shooting, then so be it.  So, if I am totally honest, I have to add a pink rifle to my list of next guns for the heck of it.

TJ, I introduced a buddy and his family to shooting this past weekend.  See the "What I Did YOU Do This Week In Guns?" thread in the GunDuds section. It was his daughter's birthday party, so I gave her a set of pink shooting muffs. You should have heard the squeeeeee!

I read somewhere of a woman bringing a pink AR to the range, and immediately being besieged by all the wives and/or girlfriends wanting to shoot it.

Get your little girl a pink 22, pink earmuffs, Tactical Tommy's Hello Kitty 5.11 Ninja garb, whatever it takes.  ;^)'

Hay Dev: I wish I could buy another Chinchester 97.  The supply has pretty much dried up for now. Apparently, the Chinese only produce enough to fill one shipping container at a time. Then they wait for demand to build again. I'll be using the Model 12 where it is legal: the Wild Bunch competitions.  The 12 is a superior shotty, about two thirds of the parts of a 97, much smoother, much more reliable, and far better able to withstand the abuse we give our guns.

As for backup guns, theoretically, the wifey and I backup each other's guns. However, for major matches, I can now bring another main match rifle. Shotgun and pistols still are an issue. That's why I want to buy another Chinchester as well as a Model 12.

1911s:  <sigh> Probably want 2 or 3 of those, too.  Including a .38 Super -- I just don't know why... Doc?

Cheers!

Haven't been to a match for a bit, but I always brought an extra gun. I brought an extra 97, and one of my AWA's, which appear in many ways similar to the USFA's that I shot. If I bring the Navies, I also bring the USFA Rodeos which are also in .38. There is usually someone who could lend me a rifle, but in honestly my own have never failed (knock on wood).

A National Match in .38 Super. That is an interesting idea. I didn't know they made any. Usually the National Match frames are for non-ramped barrels, and I thought all Supers were ramped by design. 'Course there is the NM 1911 in .38 Spl mid-range wadcutter only. But not many.

Nice gun. Not worth MY $4k, but obviously someone's.

I never considered the Super as an exceptional match round. Wonder what possessed Colt to make it - except possibly as an oddity. Wish they made more of the Commanding Officer models though. Or maybe not - I have one of the original ones from about 86, but it's been modified.

His Most Excellency Massad Ayoob has written about the Sound of Cricketts. Sounds like your little girl will love her pink gun.   Cool

However, this is not a Gun For the Sheer Heck of It, this one is your Most Important Purchase.

Oh, and she'll also need the pink sling and pink rifle case, of course!   Grin

For the sheer hellofit?  Probably a few more 1911s.  An AK purchase is planned for next year, but that isn't a "for the hellofit" gun, it has a purpose (fun and home defense).

Am I putting my Man-Card at risk if I admit to not having purchased a gun in over a year?  <Shudder>

Plenty of wants -- but nothing that made me put a crowbar in my wallet in this economy.  And I know that all those Dead Presidents that I'm squirreling away might become nothing more than scrap paper in an Obama inflation.   <Sigh>

I'm depressed -- I think I need to buy a gun.
